These pods are considered a type of legume, and due to their similarities, many species are often mistaken for one another. There are over 350 species found within the Inga genus that are similar in appearance, growing leathery pods with sweet flesh. Ice Cream bean trees are native to South America and can reach anywhere from 17 to 30 meters in height. Ice Cream beans, botanically classified as Inga edulis, are unusual pods that grow from large, wide-spreading trees belonging to the Fabaceae family. Ice Cream beans are available year-round. It is important to note that the pods are not edible and should be discarded. The seeds can also be consumed when cooked, developing a mild and nutty flavor, but they should never be eaten raw and are considered toxic. The flesh is the main portion of the pod consumed, and the light and airy pulp has a sugary-sweet, delicate flavor with hints of cream, vanilla, and cinnamon. Ice Cream beans are generally consumed when the pods have turned into shades of yellow-brown, but the exact coloring and time will be different with each type of Ice Cream bean. When the seeds are split open, they reveal a bright yellow-green interior. The seeds are glossy, firm, hard, and smooth, appearing in dark purple, almost black hues. The pulpy flesh is edible, airy, delicate, and cotton-like, reminiscent of the texture of cotton candy with a lightly moist, spongy, and chewier mouthfeel. ![]() Once the pod is opened, several small sections of translucent-white flesh surround 10 to 20 seeds. The pod’s surface also appears in hues of dark to bright green, transforming into a yellow-brown shade when the flesh is ripe. The pods have a textured, leathery, and ridged feel and are semi-thick but easy to break open with fingers. The pods hang from the tree, growg in straight, twisted, to spiraled formations, and the longest Ice Cream bean pod ever recorded reached to 2.07 meters in length. So, I was hooked up to all kinds of IV stuff and had a hospital gown on with nothing underneath and it was night and he's supposed to stay in there with me? YEAH this was my last time in the hospital.Ice Cream beans widely vary in size, ranging from 50 to 100 centimeters in length, and have a cylindrical shape with curved, blunt ends, displaying several raised and longitudinal ridges extending the length of the pod. I'm just saying I had a HORRIBLE experience right out of intensive care for 3 days-put in a regular room-they wanted someone to be in the room with me to make sure I didn't get up on my own because I could fall and get this-they send this guy in not a nurse or with any MEDICAL background at all-he worked there to help take wheel people out to their car when they were discharged!!! If you ever have the choice whether to choose the stay in the hospital or stay at home, well, with my last experience I would stay at home!! I do understand that surgery post-op care, car wreck-severe things a hospital stay is needed, but if you can be at home I would. I know sometimes you HAVE to be hospitalized for sure, but it can be a nightmare. So glad nugget is at HOME and hope she gets rest and has PAIN relief too.Īll of ya'll, being in the hospital I have found that you better not be there ALONE!!!-they will ignore you for one thing. I've been praying for our SUPER CHICKEN NUGGET-may God Bless her. I can't take her place, so help me here ya'll-it will take a bunch of us chiming in to even get close to the help she advises to others and. She's one in a zillion and is NOT replaceable and none of any of the rest of you are either. I know she's in good hands and was really relieved to find out she was going to have good pain medication afterwards and I guess it's just me waiting to hear how she's doing that's hard. So, I have a heavy heart right now, just not knowing how she's doing. Good Grief-Chicken Nugget told me to take over for her on forum for her! Gave me instructions even!!! Doesn't she know that NO ONE can TAKE HER PLACE? This is what I know. We all try to help each other along the way with our daily struggles. Of course we have never met in person, and like many of you I know you only by the words we send and I kid and joke with my HUMOR but it's to try to help with the PAIN of this disease we all share and all that we have in common. I would hold her hand and make sure she has everything she needs. I keep looking at the clock and wondering how she is-a tear I have, just wishing I could be there for her when she wakes up. I haven't been able to keep her off my mind all morning because today she has been in surgery and she has been in my prayers and I know many of ya'lls too.
